A brief history*

“The Shaggy Dogs” formed in 1995 from the tattered remnants of the “Sixths” – UQ Soccer’s second Brisbane Commercial League team. An instant success, a wonderful fusion of both novice and talented footballers, the Shaggy Dogs went on to win the double that same year – Sunday BCL Division 4 Champions and Premiers.

The ensuing years have seen the Shaggies emulate that initial success (although mainly off the field) with the team regularly featuring in the top four and always being competitive when reaching finals. After several near misses (including the narrowest loss to UQ’s Metro 1 team in the final of the 2009 Metro Cup), the 2010 pack won the Metro 3 Grand Final – finally taking the ‘choker’ chain of the leash. Consolidation over the last two seasons has seen the the Shaggy Dogs move up to Metro 2 and again perform strongly, featuring in the top four come finals time.

The Shaggy Dogs continually maintain a great camaraderie and spirit off the field, as well as on; this is primarily achieved through generous volumes of beer – the Shaggy BBQ is a feature of many home games and Miss Esky still features at some away car parks! Such is the nature of the team, each year sees many Shaggy Dogs return for another season as well as a new litter of Shaggy Pups brought into the fold. Every year culminates in “ShagFest”.. maybe ill-named, but it is what it is.

This is the nineteenth year of the Shaggy Dogs andĀ the 2013 brain’s trust features: ‘Angry LT’ Dan Tindall; Paul Pearce – aka Raul Fearce; and Mark ‘Mick’ Brown. Please join me inĀ giving them your support in 2013 as the Shaggy Dogs pursue success in the newly named City League 2.
