As promised here is a brief and uninteresting relay of the game against Annerley away tonight.
Annerley 3. Uni 2.

First half was rather unimpressive from the DG’s.
3-0 down. A couple of early taken chances our way could have changed the shape of the game but it wasn’t to be.

DGs outer defense was too slow and caught out at times and 2 goals came as a result.
The 3rd from a sharp ball through the middle catching the defense, possibly looking at an offside trap, and leaving the attacker one on one.
It was always going to be a tough game. They were pretty sharp, young and fit. Surprising standard.
Adam pulled off some nice saves to keep score as it was.

Second half showed more promise but the goals came a bit late.
I think the first came from a Wilson squared combo down the right flank with a PDK finish inside the 6 yard.
The second from a Wilson snr holding ball up hack just outside the box. Jnr stepped up to slot it under the wall and keeper.

Another 10 minutes could have seen goals from either team.
Would have been nice to draw or win and another day will probably see that but tonight I think a fair result.

A bit too much kicking the ball to the yellow guys tonight.
We seemed to have a bit too much trouble getting it from the backs to the halves at times.
Speed of opposition didn’t make this easy.
All up, not terrible, but not great.

So there I was…….. we’ll get to that later.

Apparently this was a game where a loss would definitely see us lose touch with teams above us as they were all playing bottom teams and pretty much guaranteed of a win. I’m sure this was all well known to everyone as the warm up was a little sharper than normal. Ed only lent on the fence half the time.

We started well with Bird and Wilson pinching a lot of ball off them up front with good pressure. We created a good chance from this with Colt slipping Bird through nicely who unselfishly squared the ball back to Wilson who hadn’t quite got the brain to legs synapses fully connected and he pushed his shot wide. Good signs though.

They were giving us a bit of trouble at the back with a couple of speedy strikers chasing down the obligatory roost but Kassa pulled off some nice saves to keep us in it.

Our pressure on the ball up front finally bore fruit and ……ah……I don’t really remember what happened….but someone scored. I’m just gonna assume it was Dunny. Not long after we got a 2nd which I don’t remember too clearly either. Hmmm, this match report started off with so much potential but seems to be degrading quickly.

The half-time talk mostly involved people talking. I was more focused on Jensen’s banter about the Palmer-Tinkler-Donkey video doing the rounds of the FFA office. The things you can do with Powerpoint these days.

They came out strongly at the start of the 2nd half and we seemed to be entrenched in our final 3rd for a good 10-15 minutes. But then Dunny had a moment of brilliance picking up the ball on about half way and looking up to see their midget of a keeper stranded out from goal, proceeded to delicately, Beckhamesquely, bend the ball around him into the net. I must add here he did this with his dominant foot. Pretty good I guess……good….but not great.

We continued to dominate with Scoot and Belly getting around them out wide regularly and this led to another goal with Kingy whipping in a delightful ball to a hard running Dunny who manufactured a side-ninga-thigh-volley-thingy into the bottom corner (dominant foot again). Belly was also rewarded when Colt knocked a perfectly weighted ball for him to run onto. He out-paced his defender (reminded me somewhat of Paul Hauff playing Origin actually) and cooly placed the ball past the keeper.

I think at this point Tanker said “This is nice, I haven’t seen flood gates open for a while.” How right you were.

PDK took his chance well. I can’t remember the lead up but he ended up running down the middle with no real defending going on and casually whacked the ball into the bottom left corner (take notes Colts)

Wilson finally got into the goal-scoring action as well, getting the ball out wide, skinning his defender and thumping the ball in at the near post from a tight angle……with his dominant foot.

Somewhere in amongst all this, Davo found himself at the end of a decent cross, but somehow whacked the ball straight at the keeper. The pack of seagulls on the grandstand he dragged down managed to out-screech the parrots on the other side of the field.

Pause…

So there I was, 1 man vs 100, with nothing but my wits and determination…

Look, we don’t have to dwell on it, I scored a goal, chipped the keeper, non-dominant foot, undoubtedly the best goal of the game, I heard someone say after the game “…probably one of the top 5 goals I’ve ever seen on Oval 3..” so yeah, no big deal. Let’s move on.

The game ended with Ed playing a magic ball through traffic to Colt who had…..hmmmm….no one to beat and no keeper in sight. Pausing to go through Davo’s 2 page mantra of not thinking about the keeper but not actually thinking about not thinking about the keeper, he must have got confused about not having a keeper to not think about, and blasted the ball wide. But don’t think about it too much Colt.

Pretty enjoyable game for everyone I think. Well done us.
