A dry, autumnal Brisbane evening promised perfect playing conditions—if not perfect play—but the pitch was strangely wet and a little churned up. This was the setting for a replay of the round one match with Samford when our lights went out fifteen minutes from time when we were 3-2 up. As such, anything less than a win for us would have been disappointing. However, the Samford team featured some younger guys, as well as a tall, solid captain, and they were exerting themselves physically. A strangely paced half, but evenly balanced. There were a few clear chances in the first half: one from a Loaf throw-in on the right side saw Wilson weaving down the flank, hitting the corner post, doing a right-angled turn, then continuing his weaving run along the byline, dodging defenders’ legs and shooting from a tight angle. The keeper was lucky to save the shot with an extended leg. At the other end, a Samord attacker was through on goal with only Belly to beat, which he did, but then fell over before scoring, allowing Belly to stroll over and scoop the ball up. Perhaps we were a bit flat at periods in the first half, but were generally solid at the back.

0-0 at half-time. Typical DG half-time chat, but this week with TWO grumpy old men making “points”.

The play opened up a bit in the second half, and the first goal came from buildup play that saw Muff with the ball, heading away from goal and on the edge of the box. A careless and needless foul from the defender, and the referee pointed to the spot. The penalty kick was duly slotted by Wilson who placed the ball low and hard to the left, leaving the keeper with no chance even though he guessed the right way. 1-0.

Samford now getting a bit annoyed. There were chances at both ends, most ending up blasted high and wide. One memorable chance fell to SK one-on-one with a defender in front of goal, but only managing to kick his standing leg rather than the ball. Belly pulled of a couple of good saves and proved that the steel is not rusty. This was despite once coming out and attempting to “flap” at a dangerous Samford cross that was treated equally coyly by Yru at right back. Thankfully, the ball skidded away to safety. Belly has now kept more clean sheets than Kasa, although many of the chances he saved he also helped to create [Ed. Thanks for the material, Belly]. The second goal came from a great run down the right side by PG who crossed from the byline to the top of the box. The ball skimmed across the pitch and deflected of a defender’s leg. Dazey controlled it and slotted with his left foot. 2-0, and that’s how it would end. That gave us six wins from six games and second place on the ladder.

Other things worthy of note: Alex running up a storm on the right flank. Muff and PG with energetic and enterprising running. The welcome return of Otter and Noddy. Loaf being solid at the back as well as involving himself in attack. Change-room discussion about the folliculitis on Wilson’s abdomen. Nice relaxing chat and beers after the game. Sweet.

Special mention is deserved for the Commercial League referee who agreed to take on our match after some sweet-talking from Symbol, the master of persuasion (and bribes). He probably officiated better than our average ref (even after his half-time beers), and generally let play flow with generous use of the advantage rule. He even commented afterwards that he wasn’t used to such a fast-paced game! Normally I wouldn’t be taken in by such flattery, but after seeing the UQ side that played before us that featured Stroops as one of the more mobile players, I am inclined to believe him. As an aside, anyone that observed that particular UQ lineup might have had a glimpse of what the DGs will look and play like in another decade’s time.

Also, guest spectator and UQFC alumnus, Oriol Gutierrez, visiting from Barcelona, was present and was envious of all those that were getting a run in maroon and blue (and yellow).
